STATEMENT

In studio, I create a variety of drawings, paintings, prints, art zines, and sculptures. These evolve through a process that considers aesthetic qualities (most notably colour), humour, imaginative play, and the peculiar properties of both familiar and ambiguous objects. I often use simple materials, with a preference for paper and wood. My work is provoked and inspired in part by possibilities developed through collaborative projects.

My graduate research involves analyzing artworks typically described as "outside", "low-brow", or "DIY", and investigating the relation of such work to the art market and critical discourse. I am also interested in affordable art mulitples, and the potential do-it-yourself distribution strategies have for facilitating the social integration of art outside of exclusive systems of validation.

BIO

Jamie Q studied sculpture at the Alberta College of Art & Design in Canada, and at the Canberra School of Art in Australia. She earned her Bachelor of Fine Arts degree in 2002, and moved to Montreal shortly thereafter. She self-published her first art zine in 2003, entitled Horizontal Pictures: a full-colour booklet of photographs. In 2004, she joined the Long Haul artists' collective in Montreal. Also known as Le Corrid'Art, the collective was founded by glass artist Vanessa Yanow and photographer John Tinholt to provide affordable artists' studios, as well as a space for exhibitions and community events. The same year, she began working as an intern (soon to be publicist) at the literary comics publisher Drawn & Quarterly, which opened the doors to a whole world of comics, small press, zines, and artists working across a broad spectrum of media.

Her desire to return to making art full-time led her to begin pursuing a Master of Fine Arts degree at the University of Western Ontario in 2008. She has distributed her solo and collaborative self-published art zines at small press fairs in Montreal, Sackville, Toronto, and San Francisco; and via Halifax INK and the RCAAQ at Printed Matter's New York Art Book Fair. She lives and works in London, Ontario, where she also collaborates with James Kirkpatrick as the art team Dusty Peas.
